Fiesta Time!
For this challenge, you’ll learn how to make a Mexican Horchata that you can share with everyone to celebrate Cinco de Mayo or make any day a fiesta!
Gather your friends and gather the ingredients from the list to make this dairy treat that is creamy and refreshing. Mexican Horchatas are delicious on their own, but also make a perfect pairing for spicy Mexican dishes!
NOTE: Be sure to ask your parents’ permission before preparing this treat, especially before using the blender!
Ingredients for Mexican Horchata:
1 cup uncooked white rice
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cups water
2 cups 1% milk
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons vanilla (optional)
1/3 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar (to taste)
Instructions:
- Rinse and drain rice
- Add rice, cinnamon sticks and 4 cups water to a bowl. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.
- Put ½ the rice & cinnamon mixture in a blender and puree until very smooth (about 4 minutes).
- Strain through fine strainer or cheese cloth over a large pitcher pushing on the solids with a spatula or spoon to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
- Repeat steps 3 & 4 with the remaining mixture.
- Stir in milk, ground cinnamon, vanilla and sugar. Stir well and chill until ready to serve.
- Stir well before serving over ice.
- Garnish with ground cinnamon or broken cinnamon sticks if desired.
